Children's health and safety

There are a number of factors involved in the health and safety of children, including diet, daily care, hygiene, the prevention of infections, diseases and injuries, and the judicious administration of medication. Ensuring the proper health and development of children is a priority for childcare providers, and for the Ministère.

Through its inspection activities, the Ministère de la Famille oversees the application of applicable hygiene, sanitation and safety standards, and supports measures aimed at protecting the health and ensuring the safety of children who attend childcare centres (CPE) and day care centres.

The home childcare coordinating offices are responsible for overseeing the application of these standards for home childcare providers.

These oversight activities include the following, among others:

  • Mandatory basic training in first aid;
  • Training of personnel;
  • Administration of medication;
  • Safety of outdoor play areas;
  • Criminal background check;
  • Labelling and storing cleaning products and toxic products;
  • Cleanliness and safety of the premises;
  • Registration of non-restricted firearms: a new obligation for home childcare service providers.
