Different clues can reveal an abuse situation. In some cases, the association of several signs is revealing.

Physical abuse
  • Bruises
  • Injuries
  • Weight loss
  • Unclean environment
  • Change in behaviours
  • Evasive or defensive answers to questions related to an incident
  • Family history of violence or assault
Psychological or emotional abuse
  • Dependence on someone or something
  • Depression
  • Lack of hygiene
  • Cognitive losses (rapid decline, in particular)
Sexual abuse
  • Genital or bladder irritation
  • Genital infections
  • Sores in the genital or anal region
  • Sleep problem
  • Aggressive behaviours
  • Suspicion of others
  • Excessive anxiety when the person's clothing is being changed or the person is given a bath
  • Depression
Material or financial abuse
  • Greater number of banking transactions
  • Unusual real estate transactions
  • Disappearance of valuables
  • Unexplained indebtedness
Violation of human rights
  • Deprivation of the right to accept ore refuse to receive care
  • Non-respect of confidentiality of personal information
  • Deprivation of the person's right to manage his or her own funds or property, when he or she is able to do so autonomously or with minimal assistance
Neglect
  • Lack of hygiene
  • Malnutrition
  • Skin ailments
  • Constipation problems or urinary problems
