Young children and play

Play is a key part of children's development, and this is broadly recognized by early childhood specialists and international organizations such as the World Organization for Early Childhood Education (OMEP), UNICEF, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Play allows young children to explore, understand and imagine the world. When playing, children enhance their vocabulary and other language skills, learn to negotiate with friends and resolve conflicts, and develop muscles and motor skills. Play is so crucial to children that it has been recognized by the United Nations as a fundamental right.
